Public school meetings defeat the whole purpose of closing schools: CTU

Several public schools in the country are holding meetings of large gatherings despite the health authorities’ guidelines on maintaining social distancing, the Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) claimed last week.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said parents and teachers have been summoned by principals for meetings about the selection process of students for the Advance Level grades from 2021 onwards.

Mr Stalin said hundreds of teachers and parents had gathered  in many schools in   Colombo, Ratnapura and Homagama.

“This defeats the whole purpose of closing schools, as teachers and parents are exposed to the virus,” he said.

The Education Ministry re-opened all schools on July 6, after a closure of 113 days, only to pull the shutters down again last week over concerns of a rapid spread of COVID-19, in the North Western province.  -CC
