Many animals and birds that sustain injuries due to hunting activities by poachers, who lay traps snares are being treated at the wildlife veterinary unit at Nikaweratiya.

Veterneary surgeon Dr Isuru Hewakottage said more than 50 animals and birds are brought to the unit every month with various injuries.

He said deer were among the most commonest animals that are brought to the unit regularly.

They are brought in mostly from the Kurunegala and Puttalam districts.

Among those brought to the unit are rare birds including migratory birds

The unit is also regularly called to treat elephants who sustain injuries from Hakkapattas.
