How to have fun with studying

Studying from home can be difficult. You have more distractions than you would have at school. Let’s be honest; self studying can be boring at times. There’s so many ways you can spend your time instead. And if you are learning using an online platform, the temptation to let your attention wander is too much sometimes.

However, you cannot let your studies suffer. It is important to keep up with your studies as much as possible. This does not mean that you cannot have fun with it.

So, how do you have fun with studying?

Reward yourself – Sometimes recognition can go a long way. Set a task for yourself, and give yourself a small pat on the back when you complete it. Perhaps you can treat yourself with a night of watching your favourite TV series in exchange for a day of studying. Whatever you choose as a reward, having something to look forward to will motivate you to focus on what you are doing better.

Move about – Staying put can make studying even more boring. Instead of just sitting at your desk, try to move around as much as you can. Compose a song with your study notes and dance about to it. Take a stroll while reciting what you have learned. Just don’t sit still for too long.

Doodle art – Have you ever doodled while listening to a lecture? Why fight the impulse now? Instead of drawing random figures, try to get creative with your doodles. Make them about your study notes. Perhaps a complex mathematical equation can be the new inspiration for a jewellery set.

Create mnemonics – Mnemonics can help you remember something better. Associate a fact with something memorable. For instance, the phrase “My Very Excited Mother Just Served Us Nine Pies” helped students remember the order of the nine (at the time) planets. Make up your own sentences like these. Or you can associate something with a figure. Find what works for you

Listen to music – The idea of listening to music while studying might sound counter-productive. However, most people find concentrating easier when music is playing in the background. You should still consider giving your favourite playlist a pass. If you become distracted by a good song, the point of the exercise gets lost. Instead, find  a soothing playlist, that fills the white noise without being a distraction

Make up stories – Story telling is still one of the best ways to get an idea across. Instead of struggling to swallow dry facts, make up a story using what you learned. For instance, if history is boring you, why not use a modern setting to remember the key facts and figures?
