There will be more than 270,000 new voters at the parliamentary election to be held on April 25 compared to the presidential election in November last year.

Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said there would be 16, 263,885 eligible voters for the parliamentary elections compared to the 15,992,096 voters in the last presidential election. The increase is 271,789 voters.

As for new voters the highest numbers are from the Colombo and Gampaha electoral districts which have 1,785,964 and 1,709,209 voters respectively. Kurunegala and Kandy districts have the next highest number of voters.

The lowest number of voters is from Vanni, Trincomalee and Polonnaruwa districts.

The number of members to be elected had changed in the Galle and Badulla districts, the Chairman said. As the number of voters had increased in the Badulla district and the number of voters had decreased in the Galle district, the number of members appointed to those districts had changed accordingly.

The Badulla district which earlier had eight MPs will now have nine, while the Galle district which had ten MPs would now have nine.
