President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has instructed Provincial Governors to give priority to seven areas of work in view of the limited financial allocations made in the “vote on account” passed in October last year.

A circular issued to the nine governors urges them to give priority to work related to schools, hospitals, Sathi Pola, public bus stations, street cleaning, communicable disease and waste management.

The circular signed by Presidential Secretary P. B. Jaysundera says that as the President has given highest priority to poverty alleviation, these sectors should be given priority to ensure that low income and poverty stricken people living in rural, estate and urban lagging areas have the best possible access to improved facilities which will provide opportunities to empower them.

The governors are also requested to assess teacher and staff shortages in schools in lagging areas and take steps to transfer staff from places where “there is excess to places of shortage to the best possible extent,” in such a manner that “least inconvenience is caused even
for employees liable to such re-deployment.” - SR
