Bunty, Kitty and the Christmas tree

Kitty watched the people in the house bringing in a big tree, into the living room.

He hid behind the chair and wondered what was going on. The family pulled out some cardboard boxes and took out glittery things and hung them all over the tree. Kitty watched all this with interest.

After the family members went away, Kitty slowly approached the tree. Bunty was already sitting under the tree, scratching himself. “What’s this all about?” asked Kitty slowly going around the tree and observing it. “Once a year they decorate a tree and celebrate a special day with some really nice food,” said Bunty as he lay down under the tree to sleep.

Kitty didn’t want to show Bunty his excitement. “How boring,” he lied walking away. But he watched the Christmas tree from a distance. All the shiny, glittery decorations made him want to play with them. “That dog loves to play fetch with balls. But why is he not interested in playing with the balls on this tree?” wondered Kitty watching Bunty who was already fast asleep.

After some time Bunty got up and went outside. Kitty went near the tree and touched a shiny bauble which was hanging from a lower branch.
He tapped the bauble and it started
to sway. “Oh what fun!” thought Kitty, “these are perfect toys to play with.
“He pulled it with his nails and the bauble fell to the ground and smashed.

Everyone came running into the living room. “Oh no, that cat has broken an ornament!” they shouted. Kitty ran away. They cleaned the mess and removed all the low hanging ornaments and hung them higher; where Kitty couldn’t reach them.

After the excitement settled, Kitty made sure that no one was around and went near the Christmas tree again.
He was annoyed that he couldn’t touch the ornaments anymore. Bunty was as usual sleeping under the tree.

“What’s the big deal about this big toy tree?” he asked Bunty. “Why are there balls hanging on it, if they are not to be played with?”
“It’s just a decoration,” yawned Bunty, “not a toy to play with!”

“How silly,” said Kitty feeling really angry. Kitty tried to reach a bauble on a higher branch. “Stop that!” said Bunty. “You already broke one. You shouldn’t touch them!” “Whatever,” said Kitty and walked away.

Kitty didn’t go far. He just hid behind the chair and watched the tree. His paws were itching to go and play with the shiny balls. But Bunty was there and Kitty knew that Bunty would never let him touch the decorations again.

Kitty sat behind the tree and waited impatiently for a long time, till Bunty left. Finally Bunty woke up and went to the kitchen. This was the perfect opportunity as there was no one at home as well. They had all gone out somewhere and there was no one to stop Kitty.

Kitty approached the tree and reached up as high up as he could, to touch the shiny baubles. But he couldn’t reach even one of them. He walked around the tree wondering how he could get hold of a bauble. Finally he decided to climb the tree.

Kitty was good at climbing trees, so he knew it wouldn’t be a big problem. The tree had a lot of branches and was quite thick. Kitty climbed the tree half way up. The tree started slowly leaning to a side and Kitty didn’t know what to do. “Oh no, the tree is going to fall down!” he thought, holding tight to the tree trunk.

Kitty was right; the tree wasn’t very steady and Kitty’s weight made it slowly tilt at first and then fall down with a thundering crash. Kitty got thrown away and as soon as he got up, he ran away as fast as he could.

Bunty came running and was shocked to see what had happened. “You fool, look at what you’ve done!” he shouted and tried to pull up the tree with his mouth. It was just at that moment the family opened the door and walked in.

“Oh no Bunty! Naughty dog! What have you done?” they shouted, thinking that it was Bunty who had pulled down the tree. They chased Bunty out into the garden. Most of the decorations were broken. The family struggled for a while and managed to put the tree up again and redecorated it. Bunty and Kitty were not allowed inside the house.

“They think I did it,” said Bunty feeling sad. “Now they will not give me any of the nice food on that special day!”

“Don’t worry, I will share whatever
I get, with you,” said Kitty and Bunty was surprised as Kitty was always quite mean towards him.

“Thank you,” said Bunty staring at Kitty in surprise.

The next day the family had a feast with friends and neighbours. The house was filled with the smell of delicious food. When they were called in for food, both Bunty and Kitty were surprised. They were given a lot of nice food and even petted. “We know it was you who did it Kitty!” said one of the children. “Bunty was here with us during last Christmas as well and he didn’t try to play with the tree.

But that’s ok, it’s Christmas, a time to forgive, forget and share!” he said hugging both Bunty and Kitty.
