Lyceum swimmers rule the pool

Lyceum International School, Panadura claimed a heap of medals at the International Schools Swimming Championship 2019, which was held at the Sugathadasa Swimming Complex last weekend.

While their counterparts from Panadura won most number of medals claiming 16, Lyceum International School, Wattala won the overall championship. Panadura Lyceum won 16 medals in nine categories.

A total of 18 schools battled it out at the competition. It was a tough battle as there were some strong opponents who fought against the Lyceumers.

In the end Lyceum, Wattala emerged champions and their parent school Lyceum, Nugegoda ended up runners-up. At the same time Lyceum, Ratnapura and Lyceum, Panadura won the third and fourth places respectively.

In the Under-10 Boys category Sanuga Mendis won the 50metre Breaststroke, while placing third in the 100m and 50m Freestyle events. In the Under-12 Boys category Lithum de Silva won the second place in the 50m Backstroke.

In the Under-14 category Ginura Karunaratne was placed second in the 100m Backstroke and the 200m Freestyle events. In the same category Bihan Sudusinghe won the third place in 200m Individual Medley (IM). He also was placed third place in 100m Backstroke.

In the Girls Under-16 category, Thinaya Jayaratne shone at the 200m IM and 100 m Butterfly events.

In the same category Hiruni Fernando was placed second in the 200m IM and 100m Butterfly events while Dewni Fernando also performed well in the 50m Freestyle event, winning the second place, and the third places in 100m and 50m Backstroke events. Sinethma Sirimanne was placed second in the 100m Breaststroke.

In the Under-16 Boys category Induwara Liyanage did well in 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly events. Kehan Perera performed well in the 50m Breaststroke and 100m Breaststroke events, winning both the events.

In the Under-20 category, Dulanya Perera stole the limelight as she won the 50m Freestyle event and went on to claim the second place in the 200m Freestyle and third in the Individual Medley events. Senithi Dahanayake won the third place in the100 Freestyle while finishing third in the 200m event.

The Under-10 Boys of Lyceum Panadura won the Freestyle relay. The team included Sanuga Mendis, Tashin Muthsanda , Hansana de Silva and Sandira Liyanage. Lyceum Panadura also won the Under-16 Girls Freestyle with the combination of Thinaya Jayaratne, Dewni Fernando Hiruni Fernando and Sinethma Sirimanne.
