More than 300,000 temporary identity cards for voters

More than 300,000 temporary identity cards have been issued by the Department of Registration of Persons to enable them to vote at next Saturday’s presidential election, a senior official said.

Commissioner General Viyani Gunatillake told the Sunday Times that the cards were issued as there had been a delay in processing the identity cards in view of the requirement to issue cards for students sitting the G.C.E. (O/L) examination.

He said that the temporary card also had security features where election staff would be able to check if the card was genuine.

The cards are being issued to those who have already applied for new identity cards, but are yet to receive the cards.

Meanwhile, the Nationsl Elections Commission in statement issued on Friday confirmed that the temporary identity card issued by the Department of Registration of Persons would be accepted as a valid Id card for voting.

The valid identity cards for voting will be the National Identity Card, a valid passport, valid driving licence, Identity cards issued by the Government for pensioners, identity cards issued for senior citizens, the dentity cardd issued by the Registration of Persons to the clergy and the temporary identity cards issued by the National Election Commission.
