Election monitoring bodies, People’s Action for Free and Fair Election (PAFFREl) and the Centre for Monitoring Elections (CMEV) will distribute 71 cameras and 300 special jackets to police personnel involved in policing the upcoming 2019 Presidential Election.

The monitoring bodies said that the cameras and jackets were gifted on a personal request from Acting IGP Chandana Wickramaratne, to enable the police to perform its duties efficiently.

“The cameras will be distributed to the 71 teams of police personnel deployed on election duty, to monitor and record violence and violation during election time, which will serve to identify perpetrators of such crimes, and as evidence in court cases at a future date,” they said.   The police intends to deploy 60,000 personnel for election monitoring duties.

Police personnel with cameras and wearing distinct jackets marked ‘Police’, will stand out in a crowd and serve as a deterrent to persons inclined to violent conduct on election day.
