National Hospital discouraging use of plastic

The National Hospital is discouraging the use of plastic within the premises, a senior official of the hospital said.

National Hospital Director General Dr. W.K Wikremasinghe said they had decided to discourage visitors to the hospital bringing plastic items such as plastic beverage bottles, plastic bags and plastic wrappers.

He explained that they have already limited issuing plastic bags at the hospital canteen and started issuing paper bags instead.

Dr Wickremasinghe said they took the initiative in a move to reduce non degradable garbage accumulation within the hospital.

“We understand it is impractical to completely ban plastic within the hospital premises as visitors are unable to bring water and food items without the use of plastic bottles and lunch sheet, but we would appreciate if visitors helped to keep our hospital plastic free as much as possible,” he said.
