Bangladesh High Commission in Colombo commemorated the National Mourning Day marking the 44th death anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in due solemnity, in Colombo and Matara.

Cooked food being dished out for cancer patients

The National Flag of Bangladesh was hoisted at half-mast at the High Commission by High Commissioner M. Riaz Hamidullah. A minute’s silence was observed in respect of the Father of the Nation and the members of his family who were killed on this day. Floral bouquets were placed before the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and there ws recitation from the Holy Quran.

Later, members of the High Commission travelled to Matara, to join a commemorative event organised with the Cancer Care Association of Sri Lanka.

The High Commissioner handed over a first-ever ‘Bangabandhu Memorial Grant ‘ to the Institute of Palliative Medicine in aid of round-the-year treatment and care of three Sri Lankan cancer patients.

“The grant was instituted to underline the empathy and love Bangabandhu held throughout his life for distressed people, anywhere,” a news release said.

In addition to making the contribution to the Cancer Care Association, the High Commission served cooked food for 16 Cancer patients in Matara and another 23 Cancer patients in Anuradhapura.

The High Commissioner also announced a special long-term arrangement with a leading Bangladeshi oncology pharma that will offer one cancer drug free for every two drugs purchased. Dr Samadhi Rajapaksa, founder of the institute and the association, applauded the unique gesture.

The High Commission also organised special dua (prayer) at the Fathima Muslim Orphanage (Colombo); and distributed lunch to 35 orphans through the All Ceylon Muslim Women’s Association of Sri Lanka.
