The Indira Cancer Trust initiated in late 2016 in memory of Indira Jayasuriya who lost her life to cancer has evolved into a beacon of hope for those living with the disease. The Trust has supported national cancer control programmes, promoting early diagnosis and treatment of cancer and palliative care among many other services.

In collaboration with the Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama, the Trust is currently involved in 25 projects for patients and their families who live with cancer. Their main three projects are the Cancer Helpline — an exclusive helpline for patients with cancer, Indira Care Service that focuses on livelihood projects, hair/wig donations, etc and the  Indira Paediatric Service which supports the children at the Apeksha Hospital.

Upon realisation that patients had skills to make some sort of product, be it rugs, greeting cards or food items, the Psychological Counselling, Spiritual & Social Development Unit of the Apeksha Hospital and the Department of Social Services (Western Province) initiated the ‘Diriya Hala’ a livelihood development programme. It helps cancer patients make a living by providing a platform for them to sell their goods, thereby helping ease their financial burdens.

‘Healing Notes’, a musical extravaganza to raise funds for Diriya Hala will be held on August 11 at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre. Organised jointly by Elite Promotions & Entertainment and the Indira Cancer Trust, it will feature some of Sri Lanka’s leading western musicians. All proceeds for the concert are to be donated for the Diriya Hala project.

The galaxy of artistes who will perform at the show includes Sohan & The X’periments with Trishelle, Mirage, Rukshan, Judy, Melantha, Damien & D Zone, Corrine, Dalreen, Mariazelle, Natasha, Jackie, Mignonne, Suraj, Sheaam, Shamistha, Rajitha, Raj Senevirathne, Sureshani, Sherriden and April.

Tickets for the concert are priced at Rs. 5000, Rs. 3000 and Rs. 2000 and can be got at Mount Lavinia Hotel, Galadari Hotel and at www.tickets.lk. For more information, please contact 071-2759999.
