Thomians regain Ranil Dias Memorial Trophy

S. Thomas’ College outplayed their traditional rivals Royal College 8-2 to emerge overall champions at the sixth annual sailing regatta worked off at the Ceylon Motor Yacht Club in Moratuwa yesterday.

The Thomians led by Kethaka Weerasooriya also regained the Ranil Dias Memorial Trophy and went on to extend their lead to 5-1 in the overall series tally.

S. Thomas’ clearly dominated the regatta with their superior technique and went on to make a clean sweep while conceding only the Senior Race to their opponents.

After Royal had taken the initiative by winning the Laser Class event, S. Thomas’ bounced back magnificently to seal the championship with a splendid all-round performance.

The Royal-Thomian Sailing Regatta comprised of six races in two boat classes. The Optimist Class was for the junior sailors below the age of 15 and the Laser Class was for the senior sailors.

Each class included a team race and an individual race. The race course comprised of three legs, sailing down wind, up wind and parallel to the wind.

The Thomian Optimist Team was led by Shashenka Fernando and the rest of the crew members were Dhanika Nanayakkara, Nikhil Nanayakkara and Tharen Nanayakkara.
