In the wake of renewed protests by unions at the Colombo port rallying against the East Container Terminal (ECT), interestingly the UNP labour activist Udeni Kaluthanthri has been promised a Working Director position on the board of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA).

Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya leader Kaluthanthri has been promised a Working Director position on the board of the SLPA, something that had been sought as far back as 2015.

This latest turn of events has taken place even as port authorities are trying to quell concerns among unionists at the port against sabotaging the ECT agreement scheduled for completion within three months.

Authorities have been talking to the unions as they have held a protest in the wake of the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) that would ensure the SLPA, Japan and India form the team running the ECT.
