The insect that air-conditions its home

A beehive has more than 50,000 bees
crowded together with all sorts of activities going on inside. Worker bees are busy with the honey making business and with so many bees inside, there is a need for fresh air to flow.

For this, the bees keep on beating their wings to create a draft that cools the hive, brings in fresh air and forces out stale air. Each bee, in fact, beats its wings about 200 times a second. Amazingly, this beating of wings warms the hive in the winters.

How water is useful to us
Water is a natural resource. We get it by rain and from underground soil. It is a very useful resource. Over 75% of earth consists of water. But only one percent is useful fresh water.
Fresh water is used for various purposes. Fresh water is used to drink, agricultural purposes, in production of electricity, machineries etc. The rest of the water is salty and cannot be used for any purpose without any filtration or distillation process.
The water bodies are wells, oceans, lakes, dams, waterfalls, rivers, ponds and seas etc. The sea consists of salty water. Some Arabic countries which do not have fresh water use sea water by applying into a good filtration or distillation process.
As we have very little fresh water,
we should protect it.

My family

My family is a small family, however we are a happy family. My family includes my father, mother and myself. My father is a businessman and my mother is a housewife. My family consists of pets too such as lovebirds, parrots and fish.

Healthy family relationships help in promoting good habits, cultures and traditions. A positive family provides lots of advantages.  My parents help me in every situation. They provide love, warmth and security. A good and healthy family makes a good society, and a good society involves in making a good country. I love my family.

Who am I…?

The Museum is the place I call home
But it was not the place
where I was born
They cover me with a glass
’cause I’m really old
And protect me like ten kilos of gold
Each part of my body is a box full of mystery
The real truth is only known by me and Da Vinci

Plastic Pollution
The Earth is a majestic planet engulfed in the beauty of its nature and all living creatures. Unfortunately, due to the increased usage of plastic, these marvellous creations are suffering and becoming extinct.
Marine biologists have stated that all marine life is affected and the population of whales are depreciating due to the massive chunks of plastic disposed in the ocean. However, this can be prevented by using reusable items, which can protect these creatures from extinction.
Every year the UN decides to focus on one part of the environment
and in the year 2018 they chose,
‘To Beat Plastic Pollution’. Plastics are a non-biodegradable material which can produce toxic gases when burnt and can cause severe damage to the Earth’s atmosphere. All of this can be prevented if we stop using plastic.

Vesak Full Moon Poya Day

The fifth full moon poya day of the year is Vesak. This is an important day especially for Buddhist devotees. This poya day commemorates the Birth of Prince Siddhartha, Enlightenment of ascetic Bodhisatva and the great Passing Away of Lord Buddha. These three incidents are known as ‘Themagula’ in Sinhala.
According to the suggestion made by the World Buddhist Organisation, Vesak Poya Day has been declared an international holiday.
On Vesak full moon poya day Buddhist people go to the temples, offer flowers and light oil lamps and joss sticks. To commemorate this religious day, there are many pandols erected depicting the Jathaka Stories of the Bodhisatva. People donate spectacles, wheelchairs and dry rations to poor people. Some people organise shramadana campaigns. Most devotees observe sil at temples.
By doing meritorious deeds, Buddhist people believe that it will help them to attain the bliss of Nibbana. When compared to other poya days in the year, Vesak poya day is the most important.
