In a glittering awards presentation night held at the Bishops’ College auditorium recently, CCC School of Cricket ‘Maroons’ carried away the handsome Nelson Mendis Challenge Trophy as winners of the 15th Invitational Under-14 Cricket Tournament conducted by the CCC School of Cricket.

CCC ‘Maroons’ had to fight all the way to defeat a strong and gutsy Madampa Cricket Academy from Ambalangoda for their third consecutive win of the Nelson Mendis Challenge Trophy. Twenty eight teams from many parts of the island took part in this well organised annual event where most of the outstation teams showed their talents.

Sri Lanka’s bowling legend Chaminda Vaas graced the occasion as the Chief Guest while Percy Abeysekera, the one man cheering squad, made his presence as the Guest of Honour.

In his address the bowling legend offered an inspiring advice to young cricketers on how to play the game in the correct sprit, and how to prepare physically and mentally to face any kind of opposition and to be strong and never to give up their efforts. He also cautioned parents and coaches to refrain from controlling the young cricketers from outside the boundary line.

“Let the budding cricketers learn through their own experience,” he advised. The event was compeered by young amateurs Sandro Perera and Miss. Wanasinghe, two senior students of Asian Grammar School who came in for lavish praise by many for a job well done. Entertainment for the evening was provided by dancing group from Asian Grammar School.
