Our favourite sport

Most people like sports in the world. One of the favourite sports in the world is cricket. Cricket takes a great place in the world because it can be introduced as a game of fun. It was started by the British as a game to relax the body and mind. This game is also known as the ‘Gentleman’s Game’. Today this sport is played by women too.

At present this game is managed by the International Cricket Council (ICC). This game can be played in three formats; Tests, One Day Internationals (ODI’s) and Twenty20. Cricket is played using equipment like wickets on the two sides of the pitch, a bat and a ball. Cricket is played between two teams consisting of 11 players each, with a captain, vice captain, a wicket keeper, a slip, some bowlers, some batsmen, allrounders and some fielders. Cricket is also played as six-a-side matches.

There are many rules in this game. A player cannot use drugs before playing a match. Players cannot argue with the umpires and bowlers cannot scratch the ball. Each player should behave well, and bear a win or a loss.

There are many great cricket players in cricket history. Some of them are Sachin Tendulkar, Kumar Sangakkara, Brian Lara, Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis, Mahela Jayawardene, Sanath Jayasuriya, Muttiah Muralitharan, Shaun Pollock, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Brendon McCullum, Daniel Vettori, Kusal Perera, Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels.
People learn how to behave in sporting events, how to accept winning or losing, and how to respect sportsmanship in this game.

Our role as citizens
Every single one of us is trying to be the best but nobody can be the best. We can become better people if we become
law-abiding citizens and by obeying the laws of the country our country, can improve. Respect should be earned by giving respect. We have to be disciplined so that people will think that our country has very good citizens. We have to be disciplined if we want to go further in this world.

If a school boy misbehaves in school uniform, nobody will see who you are but they will see what your school is. In this way, if you represent your country, you should act in a disciplined way which would bring respect to your country.

My favourite book
My favourite book is
‘The Faraway Tree’. It is written by Enid Blyton. It is my sister’s book but I like it.
In this story, Dick goes to stay with his cousins Jo, Bessie and Fanny. Together with their friends Moon-Face, Silky and Saucepan Man they visit the lands above the Faraway Tree and have great adventures. They have been to exciting lands like, The Land of Do
As You Please, The Birthday Land, The Land of Presents and many more. They also go to bad lands like, The Land of Tempers, The Land of
Topsy-Turvy and many more.
I like this book very much.

If I were the President…
If I were the president I would strive to strengthen our educational system. I would have special classes for kids with disabilities so that they would know they weren’t the only people who are different. I would help the needy and poor in all the ways I could.

Being a president I would try to make the country more pleasant and peaceful and I would give money to environmental funds. I would protect all endangered animals and have special reserves for them. I would punish people doing any harm to the environment by throwing waste and litter in open spaces and polluting it.

I would abolish the use of alcohol and smoking to protect my citizens from chronic diseases. All my efforts would be for the well-being of the people of my nation and I would be proud to be the president of Sri Lanka.

The Sun
The Sun is a celestial body and a star that emits its own light and heat. The sun is at the middle of the Solar System. It holds about 99.86% of the whole Solar System. The Sun rotates around its own axis. The time taken for one rotation is 25.4 Earth days. It takes 81/3 minutes for the light emitted by the Sun to reach the Earth.

The Sun’s extent is 109 times the diameter of the Earth. The Sun is located 149.65 million km from the Earth. The surface temperature of the Sun is 60000C and the temperature at the core is 15 million kelvin (K). Hydrogen gas in the interior of the Sun is converted into helium and sunlight is generated.
