A proposal to secure more seats for women on boards of directors has been submitted to Parliament by opposition MP Tharaka Balasuriya.

He has proposed in a private member’s bill to amend the Companies Act so that if the number of directors in a company is three or more, that one third of such number should be women where it is practically possible.

He made the request, through the bill, stating that women’s representation in the labour force remains low and is on the decline especially in the corporate sector and thus it’s necessary to include more women on boards of directors to ensure gender equality.
