Nocturnal birds
Birds are the songs of nature. Birds that are active at night are called nocturnal birds. We rarely see them because they are nocturnal. It is not possible to see things in the dark well, so they listen well.

Owls and owlets are the main nocturnal birds. There are twelve species of owls in our country. There are some other nocturnal birds too such as Nightjar, Frogmouth and Night Heron. Although bats can fly at night they are not nocturnal birds as they are mammals.
We can say that nature is blessed with the best.

My hobby
There are different types of hobbies that people like. Among them my favourite hobby is reading.
I started this reading habit when I was six. Once my father bought me about 20 books and he encouraged me to read one book per day. From that day I started to read books day by day from easy level to hard.

When I was small, my favourite author was Janaki Sooriyarachchi. I have read many books that she has written. Nowadays my favourite author is Enid Blyton. Her books are enormous and filled with magic and surprise. She has words which are very pleasant and there are curious words for children like us to learn. My parents always encourage me to read books. I have over 200 books and have read lots more of books.

Reading makes us knowledgeable. Some days I go to my school library and read. Storybooks are very fun and we can learn interesting things. Our school library contains fiction, historical, futuristic and also storybooks.
I read books everyday joyfully and
I will never stop reading.

Celebrating the New Year
New Year’s Eve is a happy moment for all of us. We entertain ourselves the best way possible. Many people would light candles, make many treats and light firecrackers.

But I think there are some who find the New Year’s Eve very frightful – animals. When we light firecrackers, we hear a loud bang, so loud that some of us cover our ears. But animals who are not gifted the ability to do so, become scared. They turn wild at the sounds. Many animals run around the whole place, until they get lost. One dog arrived at our house on such a day.

We may not realize it, but while we have lots of fun lighting up fireworks, hundreds of animals lose their homes, and they are lost forever.
New Year’s Eve must be joyful to everyone, although animals don’t know that a year has passed. I wish that these unwanted noises will reduce year by year, or maybe stopped, so that animals can truly have a very Happy New Year’s Eve. And of course a Happy New Year to all of you!

My first Prefect Camp
I am an active Junior Prefect of our school – Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala. I came to this place by facing and winning various barriers. On October 11, 2018, I got my badge. After a month, we had information about our first camp. It was on November 23, 2018.
I had a T-shirt printed as ‘Junior Prefects.’ I wore it for the camp. On that day, firstly we did some exercises. Then I took my breakfast. After that we had good presentations. First one was about ‘Life’ conducted by Mr. Kamal Amarasinghe. Second one was about how to make our life a success. Then I had my lunch.
Mr. Dombagahage Sir gave us an interesting presentation about ‘Leadership’ as the last one.
It ended at 6 p.m.
It was an unforgettable day in my life.

Sun’s family
The Sun has a family of eight planets. They are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and Uranus and Neptune are the furthest from the Sun.
Earth is called the Blue Planet because it’s the only planet that has water. Earth is the only planet that has life on it.
We must save our Mother Earth!
