After an inauspicious start on day one of the Premier League cricket tournament encounters, where all the matches were called off early due to bad weather; the second day’s proceedings producing saw some fine batting performances.

Taking use of the sunlight, there were five centuries scored yesterday. The ‘tons’ came off the bats of  Angelo Perera (NCC) along with Sachithra Serasinghe (Tamil Union), Ashen Bandara (Saracens), Sachithra Serasinghe and Kithruwan Vithanage both of Tamil Union for their respective sides to take the upper hand when play ended on day two.

NCC skipper Angelo Perera cracked a 154-ball knock of 123 that included seven boundaries and three sixes to help his side who was struggling on 86 for 5 to end with a score of 272 runs against Ragama CC in the match played at the NCC ground.

Perera in the process was involved in two fruitful partnerships.  First was of 64 runs for the sixth wicket with Chamika Karunaratne and the other of 69 runs for the seventh wicket with Sachintha Peiris.

Ragama CC in reply ended the day on 168 for 5. For Ragama CC, south-paw Lahiru Thirimanne celebrated his recall to the New Zealand tour squad with a polished knock of 53.

Tamil Union’s Serasinghe and Vithanage made knocks of 112 and 105 respectively. They were associated in a 157 run stand for the fourth wicket. Tamil Union recovered from their overnight score of 31 for 2 to end second day’s play on 322 for 6 and take a first innings lead at Katunayake.

This was in reply to the score of 210 scored by defending champions Chilaw Marians which came on the back of a half ton by made by skipper Harsha Cooray.

Bandara made 106 with nine boundaries. He along with Saliya Saman put on a valuable 129 runs for the sixth wicket to help Saracens SC, resuming from their overnight score of 170 for 5 to end their innings with a formidable score of 316 against Colts CC. Colts in turn was in a bad position of 133 for 5 at the Colts ground.

Half tons by Chamara Silva and Irosh Samarasooriya saw Moors SC from their overnight of 144 for 4 going on to make 320 runs against SLPA CC who was struggling on 93 for 6 in the match played at P. Sara Stadium.

BRC spearheaded by Rumesh Buddika and Hashen Ramanayake who added 142 runs for the fifth wicket ended day two on 318 for 5 in reply to Badureliya CC’s 258 to take a first innings lead in the match played at Maggona and SSC took a slender first innings lead over CCC whom they bowled out for 225 having made 229 runs on day one in the match played at the SSC ground. All matches will continue today.
