The annual Professor Manique Gunesekera Memorial Oration, organised by the Department of English Language Teaching of the University of Kelaniya will be held on December 3 at the auditorium of the University’s Manique Gunesekera Memorial Building (K5) from 3 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. This oration is organized annually as a tribute to the legacy of the late Prof. Manique Gunesekera, who was one of the most eminent academics in the field of English Studies in Sri Lanka.
This year’s lecture will be delivered by Dr. Siromi Fernando, former Chair Professor of English, University of Colombo. In her oration, Dr. Fernando will examine the use of Sri Lankan English as a first language in Sri Lanka. This year’s oration will be interesting and relevant for students and scholars in the fields of English studies, linguistics, sociology and cultural studies as well as for the admirers of the late Professor Gunesekera, a staunch advocate of Sri Lankan English who proudly identified herself a ‘native speaker of Sri Lankan English” throughout her lifetime.
