An increase of Rs. 10,000 was given to public officers on assumption of duties as President in 2015. A 15-member Special Salaries Review Commission has been appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena to formulate a national policy on wages and submit a report by end October. Even though the Commission is studying only public servants anomalies, nothing is mentioned in the mass media about the discrepancies of public service pensioners. We are at a loss to understand why public sector pensioners are not considered for the payment of this Rs. 10,000 increase.

Public service pensioners are facing immense difficulties to meet the ever increasing cost of living including medical bills, increase of housing and children’s schooling and allied expenses, etc.

We earnestly appeal to grant us the allowance of Rs.10,000 or even a portion of it before we depart. Any future increase proposed to public officers should also take into consideration the pensioners
