The Hotel Show conducted this year in Colombo saw a number of entrepreneurs displaying certain unique items on display from furniture to containers and even waste recycling innovations.

A wastewater treatment technology by Eco Engineer’s and Co Global highlighted the most durable and economical wastewater treatment in the market, according to the company.

It was noted that this type of innovation uses zero electricity during its operation; produces biogas; zero sludge, noise, odour and maintenance; and involves underground installation.

This technology called Up-flow Anaerobic Floating Filter (UAFF) was invented by Engineer Athula Jayamanne in 1999 after conducting research during a period of four years and was later patented as a new technology.

While this technology is achieving the standards of the Central Environmental Authority, it best fits with the current trend of green concept as it does not consume any electrical power and it does not produce dirty sludge and captures biogas as an energy source, the company stated.

Due to the benefit of this technology many private sector companies like hotels, restaurants, rice mills, desiccated coconut mills, rubber mills, garment factories, distilleries and breweries have selected and implement this UAFF system as their wastewater treatment system.

The company also noted that they have completed more than 150 wastewater treatment projects in Sri Lanka and India since this new technology had been developed.

SPK Flex Corp is a furniture manufacturer with an eye on designing customized products and one particular item on display was a motorbike made out of cane that could be used as a seat.

Innovations spells what the business is about, in fact there was another unique piece displayed that was showcased as a bed in a resort setting with four posters for cover.

Another interesting piece of work was the display of wooden barrels by Wooden Houzz Interior, which was identified as a unique item since it was not easy to manufacture these that ensure longevity and with no rust inside it.

These types of barrels have come in for demand and are being used as bar items and one particular barrel was designed to be used as a storage space for bottles and other essentials in a cupboard style.

Another interesting product was the KLARO advanced wastewater treatment solutions that has been in operation for about 10 years that works in collaboration with high tech German technology and equipment.

This system operates with advanced technology called “Sequencing Batch Reactor” resulting in optimum effluent treatment quality. Adaptable to nearly every situation of installation due to the wide range of optional add-ons makes KLARO the all-rounder among wastewater treatment plants, the company stated.

This system is said to consume very low energy with no mechanical parts, no electrical parts and no pumps in the wastewater. In addition the system is said to be flexible, easily adaptable and fast to assemble.

The Hotel Show also showcased a number of applications for use by the hotel sector and one of them by D&S International was “The Waiter app” where a guest visiting a restaurant could order his food through a mobile device. From calling a waiter to requesting the menu, informing the hotel that the guest is ready to order the food, wanting water, requesting the bill and being ready to make a payment with a timer that indicates the time that lapsed since the customer requested a service.

In fact the service is supposed to keep customers happy with a prompt and efficient waiter service and supports multiple languages in English, Sinhala and Tamil. The app could be used on multiple devices like tabs, phones and smartwatches.
