The United States embassy has launched the Small & Mighty grants competition, which is administered in cooperation with Sarvodaya. The programme provides funding opportunities to small organisations and individuals that may not have the infrastructure to compete in the US embassy’s formal Notice of Funding Opportunity process.

“The Small & Mighty grants competition will benefit community organisations and activists from across Sri Lanka,” said Chargé d’ affaires Robert Hilton. “We’re looking forward to seeing the creative solutions Sri Lankans develop to address challenges in their communities.”

Funded entirely by the US government, the competition is open to all civil society organisations, think-tanks, academic institutions, and individuals. All grantees must have non-profit status. The selection committee particularly welcomes proposals for projects that promote reconciliation, improve respect for human rights and freedom of expression, increase accountability, and encourage economic growth. Proposals may range between $1,000 and $15,000; the committee expects most of the successful proposals will cost less than $5,000.

Applicants must submit their proposals electronically through the Sarvodaya Small Grants online platform (https://www.facebook.com/SarvodayaSriLanka/posts/2147851475229452) in one of three languages: English, Sinhala, or Tamil. Proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis through March 31, 2019. The first round of applications will be reviewed and awarded on or before August 15 this year and every two months thereafter.
