The issue of hazardous fumes issuing from low level chimneys of crematoriums within the Maharagama Municipal council limits was raised at this week’s council meeting. Opposition members said people in the vicinity of the crematoriums were affected by the fumes reaching their houses. The chimneys in these crematoriums were only 30 feet high while the required standard height for the smoke to dissipate was 50 – 60 feet tall, the opposition members pointed out.

JVP member Devananda Suraweera also pointed out that the incinerator at Sri Jayawardenapura hospital was being used to burn waste material from other hospitals, too, and as a result of it being overused residents of the surrounding areas were being constantly exposed to fumes issuing from it.
The Mayor V.L.Piyarate assured the council members that both matters would be looked into.
