The Government has removed the 15 per cent VAT on fees paid to medical practitioners, medical consultant fees and channelling fees with effect from July 2.

A directive to this effect permitting all medical institutions and medical professionals not to pay VAT, as prescribed earlier, has been issued by the Inland Revenue Department.

This came after medical practitioners complained of unfairness in this tax which would also impact on their patients. According to the ruling, the VAT will now be imposed only on hospital room charges.
