Pollution
Nature treats everyone equally. If we treat Mother Nature with gratitude, by conserving all our natural resources we will surely get
a good feedback from Earth. But if we pollute Mother Nature, causing harm to the Earth, we will get what we deserve.
An example for this is acid rain.
It is very harmful and mostly occurs due to human activities. Sulphur-dioxide and Nitrogen-oxide are the main causes for acid rain. When these gases react with water, oxygen and other substances in the atmosphere, acid rain is formed. These harmful gases are released by burning of fossil fuels to produce electricity. In the USA most of these gases are released by fossil fuel stations and vehicles.

Acid rain then falls onto the earth and enters the water systems as run-off or it sinks into the earth. This can make water toxic to fish and other aquatic animals. The rest of the food chain is also then affected as well. Acid rain harms forest by damaging trees and plants.
By designing cleaner power-plants and using less fossil fuels and increasing the amount of eco-friendly electric vehicles, we can reduce the number of pollutants that create acid rain.

By showing gratitude to Mother Nature, reducing environmental pollution and protecting Mother Earth, we could also change the world into a healthy, clean and better environment.

My favourite storybook
My favourite storybook is ‘Sleeping Beauty’. It is a fairytale. Sometimes I read it when I am going to sleep and also on holidays.
One day when I had finished reading this book my mother said, “Let’s give it to another child.” So I said “OK”. Then I gave it to a child on the street. She was very happy when I gave her the book.
When I finished reading this, my mother said “I will bring you another storybook.” That was my best storybook ever but I am glad that I gave it to another child.

Floods in Sri Lanka
When there are heavy showers it causes floods in many parts of the country. Floods are a big problem for the people who live near rivers and lakes. People are unable to go to work and children cannot go to school. Vehicles cannot travel on roads during floods which causes major problems to all human beings. Mostly areas such as Ja-Ela, Wattala, Gampaha, Colombo and Matara get flooded during heavy showers.

Because of floods, houses go under water and roads are not passable. People get trapped in their houses during heavy floods. Some people climb onto their roofs to avoid the flood water. When people get trapped during floods they find it very
difficult to get food and fresh water. Boats are used to rescue or provide food for flood victims.

The government and other responsible bodies and authorities should take the necessary action to clean up clogged drains and reduce floods.
They should not allow people to fill up marshy lands for building purposes. They should build a better drainage system to reduce flood damage and prevent the loss of life and property.

What I think about my mom
When I think about my mom I always remember her face, a kind and loving face. When I think about her, I can hear her voice everywhere calling with love. There are many mothers but my mother is so important for me.
When I do some naughty work, she scolds me and corrects my mistakes.
It’s called love.
I know that her life is filled with love for me. When I am in trouble she is always there to help me. A heart of a home is a mother, whose love is warm and true. Home has been a ‘sweet home’ with a wonderful person like you Mom!

How I spent my first term holiday
Many children spend their holidays by going on trips. Many days I was at home playing with my dog and my mother.
I went to my uncle’s home. I studied and
I did my test paper corrections.
On the Sinhala and Tamil New Year Day I woke up at 6 a.m. In that time my mother was cooking. In the evening, I went to my uncle’s home. On another day my grandmother fell down at my home.

Many days we were taking her to the hospital. We took her to the hospital because she was injured and she was sick.
There were many fruits and I climbed the trees. I picked rambutan fruits and mangoes. Mangoes were falling to our road. I played cricket with my brother.
I enjoyed the first term holiday very much.

The Earth
The Earth is a very unique planet in the Solar System as it is the only planet with life on it. Its main gases are nitrogen and oxygen. It carries 78% nitrogen and 20% oxygen with small amounts of other gases. Water covers 70% of the surface of the planet and circulates through the atmosphere in the form of water vapour.

It is neither very close to nor very far from the Sun. Day and night are the results of its rotation around its axis. It has only one moon. Its diameter is 12,756.3 km. Its distance to the sun is 146.9 million km. It takes 365.26 Earth days for a revolution round the Sun.
The temperature on Earth ranges from -89 degrees C to 58 degrees C. The Earth has very few craters but has volcanoes on land and in the oceans.
