Adi Poson Poya
It was the day that my apartment friends and I would gather and celebrate Adi Poson Poya on May 29. We all welcomed each other at 6 p.m., in the compound. My neighbours and I played for a little bit as more and more people came.
Soon it was dark and it was time to start the celebration. We began by tying a rope between two gates. Then we brought out the buckets to light. One of the mothers lit a candle and but a few drops of wax on the ground and stuck a candle in it. We lit the buckets and hung them up on the rope one by one and they looked beautiful!

Then we all lit some beautiful sparklers and ran around making beautiful patterns. Then we decided to take a break by playing a game.
Later, we all sat down with a plate of delicious food. I munched on a few mini pizzas, a piece of cake and a cone of chocolate ice-cream and joked with all my friends. But, it was all over too soon.
We said goodbye to each other, gathered everything and went home. What a lovely evening it had been!

An Eastern Proverb
He who knows and knows he knows,
He is a wise man: seek him.
He who knows and knows not he knows,
He is asleep: wake him.
He who knows not and knows he knows not,
He is a child: teach him.
He who knows not and knows not he knows not,
He is a fool: shun him.

My mother
A mother is a great gift to a family. In our culture, a mother is considered as a ‘divine being’.
She transforms lives. She contributes much to the building of society.
She is talented and can face challenges in life.

My mother’s name is Indumini Gunathilaka. She is 43 years old. She is a doctor in the Family Health Bureau. She is very educated and professionally qualified. My mother’s mother was a Science teacher so my mother knows about Science.
My mother is so lucky because she has a younger sister.

The sad story is my grandmother died but luckily my grandfather is still living and is a good father to my mother. He is a loving grandfather to me.

My mother loves my sister and me so much that she looks after us extremely well. She spends a lot of time and money on our education. Above all she teaches us to behave properly. I appreciate her very much and wish her wonderful surprises and good health.

My trip to Haldumulla
We went to Haldummulla on April 28 but it wasn’t only us. One of my school friend’s and his family also came along with us. We left home by 5 in the morning and when we reached Haldummulla it was 2.30 in the afternoon as we stopped at many places for breaks. It was good that we came in our SUV’s as Haldummulla has some narrow roads and the path to our bungalow was even narrower than the main road. After about half an hour we finally reached the bungalow.

There was a pool outside the bungalow and I was very happy to see that. As soon as I went to our room I changed and jumped into the pool. Then we ate dinner and had a good night’s sleep.

We decided to go to see the Bambarakanda Falls so we ate breakfast and left. By the time we gor there, the falls were taller than I thought. It was 790 feet tall! When I was walking to the falls, a leech bit me and it was very painful. When we were near the waterfall we were totally drenched by the spray of the waterfall. After that we came back to the bungalow for a late lunch. In the evening after we had dinner, we sang songs. Then on April 30, we had breakfast and were ready to get back home. At 3 in the afternoon we came back home. It was a memorable and enjoyable trip.

The waterfall in my village

My village is Polgampala. It is in Kalutara district. There is a beautiful waterfall called Thambadolaella in it.
It makes the village beautiful. The water flows down between two rocks. Many visitors enjoy the beauty of it. But they make the place untidy, throwing plastic and polythene around the place. I am proud to be a villager in Polgampala.

I had outgrown my bicycle and
needed a new one. Then my Achchi thought of the Tomahawk Bicycle Quiz.
I had participated in competitions before but only in book competitions.
Now I sent in my entry for the Quiz.

I waited eagerly but my first attempt got no results. Achchi encouraged me to try again. So I did but to no avail. Two other lucky children had won that quiz. When I came to Colombo for the December holidays, I was reluctant to try again,
but Achchi persuaded me to try one more time.

After I had left Colombo to return to school in Batticaloa, I had a phone call one Sunday morning. I picked it up drowsily, “Hello?”
“Guess what!” Achchi said. “You’ve won a Tomahawk bike!”

Suddenly I was wide awake. After I had hung up, I ran about telling my family the news.
The next bit of excitement was going to get my bike from the bicycle mall. The bike I chose was red with white and black patterns. I was really happy and glad I decided to keep trying and not give up.

When I go to my grandmother’s home

When I go to my grandmother’s home I feel very happy. Usually we go to my grandmother’s place at Kottappitiya, Chilaw on vacation with our family. My cousins Chrishel, Nethara and Nethashi would join us to have a wonderful time.

We play cricket, climb trees and walk around the tank. This tank is usually without much water therefore we collect grey colour clay into a pot. When we get tired we watch TV until we feel sleepy. We usually fight with each other for our favourite TV shows. We all love delicious meals prepared by our grandmother. My favourite TV show is ‘Ninjago’ and my elder sister’s favourite TV show is ‘Modern Family’ while my cousins are interested in some other shows.
I’d like to spend my next vacation at my grandmother’s place as usual.

May Day
The last part of 18th century in America and England, there were two parties like Lords and Labourers. Lords were the owners of the factories, agricultural farms and other workshops. Poor labourers had to worked under these lords. The labourers were treated very badly by the lords. As a result, the labourers always worked against their lords. After that the workers got together and started rallies demanding benefits for the better work of labourers.

After 1815, in Ceylon, labourers were treated cruelly by the English government. As a result the labourers got together and started labour societies according to their work.

In the meantime, Mr. A. E. Gunasinghe took the leadership of labour societies. He started many rallies with workers all over the island. Afterwards, the government had to give one day for their rallies. As a result May 1st was declared to celebrate the working class. This day internationally celebrates the workers but unfortunately this year, May Day was postponed to May 7 by the government. The other thing is presently, this day is not labourers’ day but politicians’ day. Now most of the politicians take the leadership of these societies.
