An SI and three PCs were arrested for allegedly snatching a conch shell from a group of persons who intended selling it to a foreigner in the Hikkaduwa area, police said. The police personnel arrested were attached to the Hikkaduwa police. Three persons from Dompe, together with a broker in the Seenigama area had brought the shell, to be sold to a foreigner at an exorbitant price.

The conch shell was snatched from them while they were in discussion with the broker. They had subsequently called the police 119 emergency line. Acting on the complaint ASP Sathis Gamage had commenced inquiries and found details of police personnel who had been on duty in the Hikkaduwa area the previous day.

The ASP had then contacted the SI involved in the incident and in turn had been promised a share of the loot as a reward once the conch shell was sold.
The ASP in turn had invited the SI and the three PCs to come over to his office. On arrival all four were arrested. The suspects were to be produced before a magistrate last evening.
