Giving colour to his imaginative world

“Love is the essence of my exhibition. Nature’s random forms have a certain relationship, even the colours are all inter-connected. It is a replica of the society we live in. I think that relationship is what we define as love,” says Sanjaya Senavirathna explaining the theme of his exhibition “The Nature of  Love”.

His 9th solo art exhibition featuring work in acrylic and chalk on canvas opened on January 26 at the Paradise Road Gallery Cafe.

He began work for the exhibition six months ago. “I only do my drawings when the surrounding is perfect enough for me to do so,” Sanjaya states, a firm believer that one must be in the correct frame of mind to produce a work of art.

“I prefer effortless paintings. Uncompleted- wandering thoughts which roam around have all gathered on to the canvas in different colours,” Sanjaya defines his style. Looking back at his earlier collections, he feels his style has gradually become simpler – a shift from using text and mixed media in his drawings to plain colours.

Sanjaya prefers to identify himself outside the mainstream. “People do not have time to think anymore. They just automatically continue their daily routines. They leave for work so early and come back late. I think they are insane to be trapped in this same cycle throughout their lives,” he states.

As a radical artist, Sanjaya does not like to be stuck in one place. He prefers to live in his own imaginative world and sees no difference between his imagination and his canvas. He looks forward to reducing the vast gap between the real world and the imaginative world through his works of art.

A product of Pilimathalawa Central College, he lives in Kadugannawa, with his artist wife Dilani Samaranayake and their two children.
