St. Peter’s conduct Tennis camp for its juniors

St. Peter’s College, Colombo successfully conducted a tennis camp for the school’s Grade 1 and 2 players at its Tennis Courts, with the prime intention of improving the talent of junior tennis players. Eyeing the tennis tournaments scheduled for 2018, St. Peter’s have made this bold decision to groom their young competitors well in advance.

The training camp began Monday and concluded on Friday with the participation of 25 young tennis players, who are slotted to represent St. Peter’s College at tennis tournaments in 2018.The camp was conducted by a energetic coaching team headed by P. Thizant. Others in the coaching staff included Prageeth Polgampola, M. Sivakumar and Bangladeshis Ahamed Shajol and Rubel Hossain. The youngsters were taught on Technique, Tactics and the Rallying Part of the sport. The whole exercise was overlooked by the Head Coach of St. Peter’s, Dinith Pathiraja.

The camp concluded with the prize giving ceremony graced by the Rector of St. Peter’s Rev. Fr. Trevor Martin. St. Peter’s officials Rev. Fr. Thilina Pathum, the Sports Coordinator and Bernard Jesuthasan, the Master-in-charge of tennis were also present at the occasion. In addition Nishangan Nadaraja, the Sri Lanka Davis Cup player for 2017, who is also a former St. Peter’s student and tennis player, also marked his presence as a special guest.

This season, St. Peter’s won the All-Island Under-17 Inter-School championship and the National Schools Under-17 Gold Medal in addition to claiming a Bronze Medal at the Under-20 National Schools Tournament. The juniors of St. Peter’s performed creditably and emerged runners-up in the Colombo Regional Under-10 Red Ball Championship while claiming the championship in the Orange Ball segment. The Peterite juniors also claimed the third position in the Green Ball ‘B’ Division Championship at the same tournament. They expect to boost their trophy collection with more wins in the upcoming season.
