The Health Ministry will be fumigating over 5116 examination centres in schools in view of the Ordinary Level Examinations starting on December 12.

National Dengue Control Unit Consultant community Physician Dr. Preshila Samaraweera said the decision was taken in view of the prevailing rains which can increase the number of mosquito breeding sites that could endanger the 688,573 students sitting for the exams from December 12 to 21

The number of suspected dengue patients across the country as of end November stood at 174,009 of which 41.93 per cent of the cases were from the Western Province.

The country experienced the highest number of patients in the first week of August with 22,270 reporting for treatment for that month. The number of deaths as of end November stands at 400.

Dr. Samaraweera said that the number of dengue patients which stood at around 900 a week has now increased to 1500 in the last few weeks.

She warned that the public should not be complacent about cleaning up their homes and surroundings as the number of dengue cases are set to increase further.
