Asian Para Games athletics pool selections from November 22
The Athletics Championships of the 20th Army Para Games will be held from November 22 to 24 at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex, Diyagama.
Over 700 Army Para Athletes will take part in the three day event. There will be 72 para athletic events.
Twelve sports are included in the Army Para Games other than athletics. They are: Archery, Badminton, Cycling, Shooting, Table Tennis, Power lifting, Wheelchair Marathon, Wheelchair Tennis, Swimming, Volleyball sitting, Beach Volleyball and Para Rowing.
Only athletic events are to be completed. The other sports have been completed.
Retired Army Para Athletes too can take part in the event. This will serve as a selection trial for the Asian Para Games to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia from October 8 to 16 – 2018. Sri Lanka will send a full team for the event. Sri Lanka has won medals in two Paralympics (2012 London, 2016 Rio). They have also won several medals in Para Asian and Para World Athletics.
Dialog Axiata PLC will sponsor the Para Games this year too.
The Army Commander Maj. General Mahes Senanayake will be the Chief Guest at the opening ceremony. Defence Secretary Kapila Waidyaratne will be the Chief Guest at the closing ceremony.
