J.M. Eranda Madusanka of Uva President’s College and R.D. Kalpani of Matara Central College won the Boy’s and Girls’ championships of the third stage Nestomalt Mini Marathon held in Matara. Eranda finished ahead of Salindu Kanchana of Welagedara Maha Vidyalaya by nearly two minutes as he emerged the Boy’s Mini Marathon champion. The event which was flagged off from the Uyanwatte Stadium saw Eranda reaching the winning post with a timing of 36 minutes 58.6 seconds, as Salindu clocked 38 minutes and 18.2 seconds. The third place went to Vishwa Tharanga of St. Servatius’ College Matara, who finished with a timing of 38 minutes and 20.9 seconds, slightly behind Salindu.

Kalpani was at her best, as she timed 43 minutes and 49.3 seconds to clinch the Girls’ Mini Marathon. P.G.N.D. Samarakoon of Welimada Maha Vidyalaya finished second with a timing of 44 minutes and 33.6 seconds, while her school mate Nayomi timed 48 minutes and 17.7 seconds to finish at third.

In the 5kilometre events of the two categories which were conducted concurrently with the main race, S.V.P. Poorna Sandamin of Rahula College Matara and Hasanthi Madumali of Sujatha Balika Vidyalaya Matara won the Boy’s and Girls’ titles respectively. Sandamin timed 13 minutes and 15.1 seconds to claim the win as Asitha Jayamal of Devapathiraja Maha Vidyalaya and Vishwa Pumuditha of Narandeniya National School Matara finished second and third respectively.

In the Girls’ 5km run, Madumali timed 15 minutes and 56.50 seconds as Rashmi Probodha of Vishaka Vidyalaya Badulla and W.M. Shamika of Ananda Central Badulla claimed the second and third places respectively.

Over 1600 athletes from Colombo, Southern and Uva regions took part in the Nestomalt Mini Marathon and the 5km events organised by the Ministry of Education with the sponsorship of Nestle Lanka. A total of 31 runners took part in the Boy’s Mini Marathon while in the Girls’ category 23 runners took part. In the 5km run 1020 took part in the Boy’s event while and 582 ran in the Girls’ event.
