The Ministry of Education (MoE) has proposed in the 2018 Budget, a monthly allowance for students who do not attend school due to economic hardships and other reasons, said Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.

Minister Kariyawasam said that, under this programme, an allowance, of Rs 100 per day, will be paid on a monthly basis, starting next year.
He added that discussions are under way as to whether the allowance be given to the student or, to a representative in the school, appointed on behalf of the student.

The Minister also noted that an islandwide survey has also been initiated to obtain details about such students through the school principals, to be submitted by next year. - Damith Wickremasekara
