Paintings of children between the ages of 16 and 19 from different parts of Sri Lanka, based on the theme “Creating a better working world for women” will be displayed at the JDA Perera Art Gallery on October 8 and 9.

The theme of the art exhibition echoes this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) slogan “Be Bold for Change” that calls for increased recognition of the immense contribution women make to the economy of their countries both in the paid and in the unpaid sector and changes that would help create a more inclusive, gender equal working world.

A woman’s work is multifaceted. She works in almost all fields. What are her diverse contributions? What are the problems she faces? Can we create a better working world for her?

These are the questions that would weave through the works of art by the young competitors.

The organisation has lined up cash prizes of  Rs.50,000 as first prize, Rs.30,000 as the second prize and Rs.20,000 as the third prize. WERC will also recognize each young participant in the competition with a Certificate of Merit and a Certificate of Participation. The deadline for entries is September 25.

Bernadeen Silva in whose memory this art exhibition is being conducted was one of the founder members of the Women’s Education and Research Centre (WERC) and served as its Trustee till her passing away in February 2007.

This competition which encourages young artists to understand and express important issues through their painting, serves as a fitting memorial to one who led a life of service to humanity.
