Lyceum International School, Wattala and St. Joseph’s College, Colombo won the Overall Championships in the Girls and Boys categories respectively at the Pentathlon Swimming Championship 2017 concluded at the Sugathadasa Swimming Complex yesterday.

Fifty events were worked off in three days duration at this year’s edition in Under 11, 13, 15 ,18 and 18 and over categories where ninety six schools were represented by 3480 swimmers in all five categories.

St. Joseph’s College with 34 points won the Boys championship while Lyceum International School, Wattala with 32 points secured the Girls Championship.

In the Boys section Lyceum International School and Nalanda College, Colombo clinched the second place with 23 points each.

Sirimavo Bandaranaike Balika Vidyalaya occupied the first runner-up spot with 27 points and Visakha Vidyalaya followed closely with 25 points in the Girls section.

In the show piece event, Vinoli Kaluarachchi of Sirimavo Balika came up with a repeat performance when she hogged the limelight by winning the overall championship  in the Girls Under 18 event with a time of 7:39.40mts. She finished the Butterfly stroke in 1:11.48mts, Backstroke in 1:10.91mts, Breaststroke in 1:34.60mts, Freestyle in 1:02.78mts and Individual Medley event in 2:39.63 mts in grand style.

Living up to his Alma-mater Gavin Karunanayake of Brilliant Stars International College won the Under 18 Boys Overall championship with a timing of 6:44.39mts. Karunaratne timed 1:00.38mts in the Butterfly, 1:07.23 in the Backstroke, 1:16.62mts in the Breaststroke, 58.06mts in the Freestyle and in 2:22.09 mts in Individual Medley to be the winner.

  •  Under-11 Girls: S. Jayasinghe (Lyceum International Wattala) – 6:06. 94mts; Boys: U.H. Ramitha Perera (Dharmaraja College, Kandy) – 5:43.78mts
  •  Under-13 Girls: Nabhashie Perera (Sirimavo BV) – 5:10.70mts; Boys: Chris Pavithra (Lyceum International, Nugegoda) – 4:54.13mts.
  •  Under-15 Girls: Ganga Senevirathna (Visakha Vidyalaya) – 7:55.03mts; Boys: A. Hassan (Lyceum International Wattala) 7:07.48mts
  • Under-18 Girls: Vinoli Kaluarachchi (Sirimavo BV) – 7:39.40mts.; Boys: Gavin Karunanayake (Brilliant Stars International) 6:44.39mts
  •  18 and Over Girls: Dilekha Goonewardene (Otters Aquatic Club) 11:20.29mts; Boys: B. Dilanka Shehan (Nalanda College, Colombo) – 9:37.81mts.
