Funfairs or carnivals (as one would call them), have always been a wonderful source of entertainment for both adults and children. We’ve seen the different school carnivals and of course the church fairs, all of them filled with lights, music and games etc. However you would’ve probably not come across something that adds education to the mix.

This is just what the Musaeus College Past Pupils’ Association (PPA) has in store for ‘Funvention 2017’. The event is set to take place on September 1, 2 and 3 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) at the Thurstan College grounds (by the independence square), Colombo 7.
The Mirror, caught up with the PPA, who are anticipating the launch of the festival. They believe, this is the first time Sri Lanka will experience an event of the sort. Describing it as an “Edutainment festival”, the organisers tell us, it will feature a variety of educational and fun filled activities for adults and children alike. They strongly feel, the festival will be full of fun, while still giving the participants an opportunity to learn.

Previously the organizers had observed a lack of educational entertainment in the country, where people could still have fun while learning. It was this observation, which led to the initial conceptualization of the event, they tell us.

‘Funvention 2017’ will kick off on September 1, with an evening filled with music. Aptly titled ‘Euphoria’, the concert will feature renowned musicians Bathiya & Santhush, Umariya, Lahiru, Billy Fernando with 2FoRTy2 and much more.

The rest of the festival will be divided into four zones, namely the ‘learning zone’,’ Cartoons and Stories through the ages’, ‘fun zone’ and the ‘music and entertainment zone’.  Just as their title indicates, each zone will cover a range activities which will take place in parallel with the other zones, thus giving the participants a unique experience.

Some of these activities will include Poetry Slam, Storytelling, indoor/outdoor rides and games, child jamming sessions and much more.
Funvention will also include a “Global Food Village” which will offer a range of cuisines by popular food and beverage vendors in the country. Aside from this, the festival will also include a street named “Shop till you drop”. This will be fitted with trade stalls ranging from garments, footwear, jewelry, linen, cosmetics, household goods, electronic items and motor bikes etc.

Overall ‘Funvention 2017’ offers three days, packed exciting activities for adults and children alike. It is certainly not one to be missed. Tickets can be purchased in advance at event.lk.
