Books are my best friends
When I was very small, I couldn’t read sentences but I was able to read small words. I had lots of books with beautiful pictures. My father encouraged me to read by giving me many storybooks. I started reading with the Ladybird ranges. Then I went on to the Ladybird Classics.

By this time I was able to read very well. Actually it became my hobby. My father bought me more and more books and whenever I had free time I read them over and over again. It is very interesting to go through my encyclopaedia and find more details about the things I learn in school.

About a year ago I started reading the Famous Five series of books. I also like the Harry Potter books. By now I have collected lots of interesting books and I have my own mini library in my room. I also borrow the books that I don’t have at home from our school library.

I have improved my knowledge by reading and I do enjoy lying down on my bed with an interesting book. Some books are read to gain knowledge and others to relax or as a hobby. We can learn about animals and plants. Reading helps us to think and imagine. The knowledge we gain by reading is a good habit. Children and adults read for many reasons.

My favourite trip
My favourite trip was the trip that we went to Singapore last December. First we went on the Ferris Wheel. There we were able to see the whole of Singapore from the top. Then we went to the Sea Aquarium. There we saw lots of colourful fish of many sizes. We saw sharks, dolphins, crabs, jellyfish, starfish and even sea horses. Out of all the fish we saw, my favourite was the Dory fish. It was so beautiful that my sister and I didn’t want to leave the Sea Aquarium.
I will never forget my trip to Singapore.

What we can do to keep our school clean
Keeping our school clean is our responsibility though there are paid staff assigned for this. An unclean school can be a breeding ground for various viruses and also Dengue mosquitoes. Dengue is a serious threat to all school children.

To address this topic I would divide the activities that we can do. We can divide the students into four groups who will take care of cleaning activities. The group can be name as ‘CETFO’ (Cleaner Environment Task FOrce) Classes will have four litter bins – one for waste paper, one for glass, one for plastic and one for food leftovers. Students will be educated to dispose the waste into the correct bins.

Under the guidance of the class teacher we will develop many posters highlighting the importance of a clean school. Through our teacher we will request to introduce a competition among the classes and select the ‘most clean class’. We are confident the above actions will create a lot of interest and students will be committed to keep our school clean.

Health is Wealth
Good health is a great asset. It is the most valuable treasure a man could have. People with good health don’t fall sick very soon. Who doesn’t like to be in good health? Everyone hates to be ill. We feel quite uneasy and unhappy when we are not in good health. We cannot enjoy anything when we are sick and we lose our appetite for food and life becomes a hassle.

The main cause that leads us to be ill is small, tiny micro-organisms. They enter our body because of our carelessness. They grow and multiply in the air, water and dust. Then they get into our bodies. Not only germs, we get ill by some of our activities also such as not eating correct foods, taking too much fats, being lazy and not getting enough exercise.

To be healthy and active, we need to play outdoor games. We need to exercise. We need to keep ourselves clean. These are the most important things that should be done to be healthy, active and creative.

Let us protect our environment
An essential problem of the 21st century is world pollution. Currently the environment is so contaminated that urgent measures should be taken. A single individual cannot be blamed for world pollution. However, every person should take care of his or her habitat. In addition, it is vital that environmental issues are treated internationally.

Nowadays environmental problems are too big to be managed by individual persons or individual countries. In other words, it is an international problem.
Lately, many presentations, conferences and international summits are held to deal with waste treatment, recycling, soil and water contamination. Joint efforts and consolidation can only help in the mutual war towards the ongoing environmental disaster. For instance, governments should offer support to companies and organisations involved in manufacturing, industry or agriculture in order to find environment friendly approaches.

However, the influence of individuals over environment should not be ignored. If we do not confess that our planet is our home, we will never be able to take adequate care of it. We have to contribute everyday to the preservation of nature and environment. Our next obligation is to separate waste and throw bulk only in the designated areas.
To sum up, environmental problems should be handled by local and international authorities as well as individuals. Every single person should take care of the environment. Moreover, we have to bring up our children to be conscious citizens of a clean and preserved planet.

Our Independence Day
Our Independence Day is celebrated on
February 4 every year. Independence Day means we got freedom from the Portuguese, Dutch and British nations. Portuguese ruled our country in 1505. Dutch ruled our country in 1640, British ruled our country in 1815.

Our famous heroes were Veera Puran Appu, Gongalegoda Banda, Veera Keppettipola. They fought to get freedom for our country.
Now we celebrated our 69th Independence Day.
The chief guest was President Maithripala Sirisena.
We celebrated the Independence Day very happily and we remembered our soldiers as well. Now we must protect our country.

The literature teacher
She’s petite and sweet,
And she talks with a tweet,
But she’s one teacher that none can beat.
She’s as gentle as a mother,
And her faults do not bother!

If you’re nice, she’s nice,
If you’re naughty do think thrice,
For as hard as she can, she tries,
To make our world free of lies.

She is poetic,
Yet never chaotic,
And I wish she’d show us that movie,
A story about Great Expectations,
ever so groovy.

If I could be on a TV show
Well, my favourite TV show is
‘Rise and Shine.’ Channel Eye telecasts this popular programme daily at 6 a.m.
It has many interesting segments,
giving preference to the daily news.
My favourite is Nathaliya, when it comes to the role of an interviewer
in the segment of ‘The Guest Speaker
of the Day.’
If I could be on this TV show, most certainly I prefer to appear as the
Guest Speaker on a Saturday; because I would like to speak to the public, especially students about the topic,
‘Best Use of Time.’
I would make full use of the limited time using the following sayings to convey these messages.
l Remember that the early bird catches the worm.
l Time stops for no one.
l Time is money.
l Time is what we want most,
but what we use worst.
l One always has time enough,
if one will apply it well.
l “A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.” Charles Darwin.
Finally I will make the following statement to convince my topic,
‘To realize the value of one year; ask a student who has failed a final exam’ and pledge to treasure time even more by sharing it with their special people.
