The prospect of some mouth-watering contests on day two of the Schools Rugby Sevens should make lovers of the game flock to the Race Course this morning. S.Thomas’ Vs St. Peter’s, Trinity Vs Royal, St. Anthony’s Vs Isipathana and Kingswood Vs Science should whet the appetite of any rugby fan.

The Anthonians, who lost to Isipathana by a mere point in the knock out semis, were in red hot form as they pummelled Moratu Vidyalaya and Lalith Athulatmudali 61-0 and 66-0 respectively. However they were nearly brought down to earth by a stubborn Wesley side who refused to concede. The final tally was 14 all.

The Joes ran into an early 17-7 lead at the break against the Thomians. Yet the boys in blue and black had the last word as they won the game 22-17. The losers failed to add to their tally in the second half. Trinity were slow off the blocks in the match against Vidyartha who led them 14-7. However, the Bradby boys looked to the end and finally triumphed 28-14.

Royal had only one game which they won 17-0 at the expense of Thurstan. Thus, a “mini” Bradby is on the cards. Science College who had a sorry league season, stormed back to their best when they over-ran the more fancied Dharmaraja side 36-0. Science also thrashed the Sylvestrians 60-0. The Rajans eased past the Sylevestrains 42-7, Another Kandy school, Kingswood knocked out Blaze Trophy rivals Wesley 33-0. CWW Kannangara gave Kingswood a better run before finally going under 5-27

It was a matter of concern that five schools Ananda, Nalanda, Maliyadeva, Mahinda and D.S. Senanayake-failed to turn up. This caused some problems to the officials. The tournament which was played at both the Race course and Royal Grounds saw an early finish at both venues as a result of the depleted attendance. Today’s matches which will commence at 8.20 a.m. will be played only at the Race course.
