“We have many aspects of French culture which are being highlighted by the French Spring Festival but French culture wouldn’t be the same without fashion,” said Cultural Counsellor for the French Embassy in Sri Lanka Jean-Phillipe Gavois at a press conference this week to announce the International Graduate Fashion Spectacle(IGFS)  presented by the Lanka Institute of Fashion Technology and Mod’Art in partnership with the Embassy. This event is part of the French Spring Festival in Sri Lanka and will feature students of the Lanka Institute of Fashion Technology (LIFT) alongside graduates from several countries who will present their work on the theme of French fashion.

Managing Director of LIFT Niroshani Leanage feels that this opportunity will open many new avenues to experience fashion with value in the world. “In a fast moving world where fast fashion (Low cost mass manufacturingis impacting on many people through its process and polluting the environment rapidly, we hope opportunities like IGFS could bring value to the fashion and apparel industry and the consumers of fashion,” she said.

This year participants from France, United Kingdom, Germany, India and Pakistan will be seen alongside local students. The international students will have the chance to visit apparel factories, local craft workshops etc, to gain an understanding of  the Sri Lankan fashion industry. The Lankan students, who follow fashion degrees in Sri Lanka in partnership with Mod’Art – Paris, will be graduating this year and this event is aimed at helping them showcase their talents though an exhibition and fashion show. The exhibition will be held at the foyer of the Hilton’s grand ballroom on July 9, the same day as the fashion show. The French band Gala Swing Quartet will also perform in the evening after the event; cocktails and international cuisine will be served at the event.
