Give2Lanka’s Executive Director and Zonta Director Farida Lukmanjee’s invite to family and friends read: “I would love to have your presence on the 11th for a meal together on my birthday. Whilst recognizing your need for well wishes and appreciation through gifts, may I kindly request you to differ from your normal practice and donate in kind towards a worthy cause……. the reality is that there are many others who do not even have the luxury of affording proper drinking water, leave alone the luxury of celebrating a birthday like mine. On behalf of them and in account of my blessings, I salute all who would opt to donate their sum of preference towards this worthy cause.

Give2Lanka: Providing drinking water for those in drought-stricken areas

“Give2Lanka is assisting families in the Puttalam and Batticaloa districts to get drinking water. The scarcity of water may seem odd when you hear news about floods, but there is a part of Sri Lanka which has not seen rain for the past 2 years! Families in these villages go through tremendous challenges which are both logistical and health related due to poor or no access to proper drinking water.”

This birthday appeal raised more than Rs. 300,000 which will pave the way for 400 families to have two months of drinking water, while institutions such as ‘Star Packaging’ and ‘Zonta Club’ have come forward to help Give2Lanka with the acquisition and installation of water tanks.

Give2Lanka is also raising money for other causes such as building houses for families living in shacks and the ‘Berendina Child Scholarship Program which provides educational support at the Advanced Level examination, career counselling, and linkage to jobs, as well as higher education grants for those who fail to enter the university.
