Recently established administration and revenue monitoring units at the Finance Ministry as well as personnel divisions of the former finance minister are being disbanded, removing its staff numbering around 20.

Informed sources disclosed this decision was taken to avoid the duplication of work at the Ministry and Departments of Customs and Inland Revenue.

The aim of this move is to plan and implement the economic policy reform programme enabling the new Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera to effectively use skills and experience of senior officials.

Senior Ministry officials who were not given their due recognition will be given priority in the first instance to tackle shortcomings and streamline administration and resources from external sources would be sought only if it is necessary.

The National Project Management Division at the Ministry headed by its Director Bradley Emerson is also expected to disband under this shake up. Employees of the Departments of Customs and Inland Revenue have protested against the deployment of officials of the Finance Ministry units to supervise their duties in several occasions during last one and half years but it went unheeded.
