The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) is to launch yet another token strike tomorrow (22).
GMOA Media Committee member Dr. Sajith Mallawarachchi told the Sunday Times that it had initially intended to launch a four-hour token strike. However, the GMOA branch unions in the North Western and Central Provinces had decided on a 24-hour token strike, while the North Central Province is yet to make an announcement.  In such circumstances, he stated, other provinces are yet to decide on whether the initial four-hour token strike will be extended to a 24-hour token strike.

“Nevertheless, GMOA members in the Western Province will only engage in a four-hour strike from 8 am to 12 noon,” he explained.
“Trade unions outside the Health sector will not be a part of the token strike but, as a token of support, they will conduct a leaflet campaign,” he added.

Dr. Mallawarachchi pointed out that the token strike is to protest against police treatment of students protesting against the South Asian Institute of Technology & Medicine (SAITM) on Wednesday. He added that failure to apprehend those responsible for the grenade thrown into the Sri Lanka Medical Council building (SLMC), not implementing the law in the case of SAITM CEO Sameera Senarathne, and suppression of trade union leaders, are some of the other reasons that led to the decision for a token strike.
