Captain Shivantha Pedris of the Airline Pilots’ Guild of Sri Lanka (ALPGSL) was elected as the Regional Vice President for Asia (West) at the 72nd Annual Conference of the International Federation of Airline Pilots’ Associations (IFALPA) held in Montreal, Canada earlier this month.
The position overlooks safety and security of airspace controlled by Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has been a member of IFALPA since 1954 and this is the first time that an airline pilot from the country has been elected to such a senior post.
According to the IFALPA, more than 100,000 pilots in over 100 member associations around the world are members of the IFALPA.

Pilot Associations join IFALPA to become part of a worldwide pilots’ federation because it has a voice at all of the world’s major aviation forums. They participate in the specialist IFALPA committees to contribute, learn and understand different aspects of aviation, to help formulate policies and positions. The Federation also works and interacts with other international organisations to exchange views and share problems.
