More than two thirds of parliamentarians attended sittings on May 3rd — from which date their attendance register was made public.
Of the 224 parliamentarians, excluding the Speaker, 173 MPs had attended sittings on the day, according to the attendance register.

The move to make the MPs attendance register public was given approval by Parliament after Speaker Karu Jayasuriya suggested it as a remedy for poor attendance.

Most of the complaints had come from Joint Opposition and JVP MPs who accuse ministers of being absent during question time or when subjects under their purview were being debated.

The MPs’ attendance details are uploaded on the official website of Parliament.
However, being marked present in the attendance register is no guarantee that the MPs will be present during the entire sittings.
