A charitable act
My mum gave me 100 dollars as pocket money, my dad being an Airline Pilot attached to the National Carrier.
I was so thrilled that the very next day I decided to play some games at the Game Store. On my way to the Game Store I came across a feeble looking beggar who was desperately begging for charity to maintain his family of 8 children. One of them was ailing and was in a pathetic condition. All the passers-by ignored him.
I promptly went up to him and enquired, “Dear Uncle, how much money do you need?” “My kind child, give as much as you wish” he replied. I immediately changed my mind and thought for myself that I would sacrifice my pleasure and instead do a charitable act and handed over the 100 dollars to him. The beggar man was so happy that he was in tears and threw his arms up and prayed for me.
When I told my mama about this incident she was so delighted and said, “I am proud of you my son. You have done a generous deed and set a glowing example for others to follow.”

A movie with my friend
The holidays came very quickly, so my friend and I were going for a movie. Our parents thought of the movie ‘Smurfs’. They thought about going to the Empire in Independence Square. My cousin too wanted to join.
So the movie was on April 10.
We got 3D glasses. There are
two types of 3D glasses. They are
K glasses and A glasses. The ‘Smurfs’ movie has a lot of characters. They are Papa Smurf, Head Smurf, Brainy, Muscle, Noisy, Clumsy and Smurfette etc., and Gargamel, Cat and Bird. We ate some chips while the movie was going on. This was a wonderful movie.

My school sportsmeet
My school sportsmeet was held on February 23, 2017. My school is Bishop’s College. There are four houses in our school. They are Ford, Chapman, Copleston and Henley. Our chief guest was a past student of Bishop’s College. The parents, teachers, principal, vice principal and students were present at the sportsmeet. There were lots of events and activities. In the evening we had a marchpast. After we got our house results, 4th place went to Copleston, 3rd place was taken by Chapman, 2nd place was given to Ford and Henley came first.

The chief guest had enjoyed watching our sportsmeet and she gave a good speech about it. Our house captain was Janani. When I was marching, I felt proud. I was so proud and happy when our school captain was carrying our school flag.

My guardian angel
I hear her voice
That was always nice
She was always beside me
buying everything I want no matter the price

She fascinated me all the time
Knowing me so well
Without opening my heart to see
She gave me comfort and all the things I’d ever need

She was my sunshine
Never leaving my side
Even through the storm
For that I’m forever grateful

Now she’s not here beside me
But she’ll eternally be in my heart
For she’s my mother
I would never wish for another

Vesak – an important religious festival
Vesak is a religious and cultural festival in Sri Lanka. It is celebrated on the day of the full moon in the month of May. Vesak Day is one of the biggest days of the year and is celebrated by Buddhists all over the world. Buddhists commemorate this important event that took place in the life of Lord Buddha on this day.

First comes the Birth of Siddhartha Gautam  in Lumbini in Nepal  which took place under the arbour of Sal trees, where Queen Mahamaya gave birth to him.  The second event was Siddhartha’s supreme attainment as the Buddha, the Enlightened One. The third event was Lord Buddha’s Parinibbana over 2500 years ago at Kusinagar.

Apart from Sri Lanka, many Asian countries including India, Japan, Singapore and Taiwan celebrate Vesak. The temples and houses are decorated and illuminated on this day with bright coloured lights, flags, buckets and Vesak lanterns. Many Buddhists involve in religious activities. Some observe sil and meditate on this day to invoke blessings. They also give alms and help the needy too. Vesak lanterns colour up this event impressively. People give dansals to passers by signifying Lord Buddha’s qualities. Vesak pandals are created in villages depicting various Jathaka stories with paintings.
Vesak is a festival of togetherness, a festival of rejoicing in the Birth and Enlightenment of the Lord Buddha, as well as a time for reflection of his Death. So let’s celebrate and enjoy this Vesak as true devotees and followers of Lord Buddha.

My favourite library

I have been to many libraries. Out of all I really love the British Council Library.  It is situated in Colombo.
It has a great cafeteria too. I often go there with my neighbour, who also has membership.  There are many books in the library. There is also a reading section, where we can sit and read all day. It is so comfortable inside the library.

The British Council Library has not only got the facility of providing books. It has story-telling sessions, workshops, competitions, movie showing times and many more facilities, which are specially conducted for children like us.  They also allow us to borrow DVDs. Not only for children, there are many other activities for adults too, where sometimes children can also join, such as an ability to talk to a celebrity.
I really love the British Council Library and I wish I could stay there for one whole day. And what’s more, the online access to read books is very useful and I am going to get the online membership really soon.

Sinhala and Hindu New Year
Sinhala and Hindu New Year falls on the 13th and 14th in the month of April. They start with seven traditional customs, such as ‘Navasanda Baleema’, ‘Parana Avurudda Sandaha Snanaya’, ‘Punya Kaalaya’, ‘Avurudu Udava’, ‘Ahara Anubavaya’, ‘Ganudenu’ and ‘Hisa Thel Gaama’.  By these customs people learn to work on time because we must do the proper customs in time. And also there is another custom, ‘Naagam Yama’. In this period either we go to our relations house or they come to our house.

In the New Year season we should have no enemies.
Sinhalese make kavum, kokis etc., while Tamils make laddu and murukku. Not only us, even the environment changes. Flowers like Ehela and Erabadhu bloom and the koha sings merrily. Crackers and sky dives are popular these days but you should be careful when using them. So I wish you a Happy New Year.
