Public sector polls candidates not allowed back at posts

Public sector employees who resign from service to contest elections will not be able to return to the same position they held, the Public Administration Ministry has announced.
Ministry Secretary J.J. Rathanasiri told the Sunday Times that the ministry secured Cabinet approval recently since it has become a bad practice in the public service where defeated candidates return to the same post.

“However, they can join in any other public institution to serve the public but they cannot return to the previous post they held,” he said. In keeping with the Cabinet decision, the ministry this week issued a circular.
Accordingly, relevant changes have been made to the Establishments Code. Officers are now required to submit an appeal to the ministry if they are considering returning to the public service.
This move came as the Government was taking steps to hold the long due local polls this year.
