National Moot Court Competition 2017: The battle for the H V Perera Memorial Award

The Inaugural “National Moot Court Competition” was successfully hosted by the Moot Society of Sri Lanka Law College recently.
The Moot Society of Sri Lanka Law College invited the University of Jaffna, the University of Peradeniya, the University of Colombo, the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), the Horizon Campus of Business and Technology, the British College of Applied Studies and other state and private institutions engaged in teaching law.

Supreme Court Judge Buwaneka Aluwihare, Court of Appeal judges A.H.M.D Nawaz and Lakshman Dehideniya adjudicated the finals while Attorney General Jayantha Jayasuriya presented the awards to the winners

Dr. Sunil Coorey, an expert in Administrative Law of Sri Lanka, drafted the compromis for the competition. His doctorate thesis the ‘Principles of Administrative Law in Sri Lanka’ is regarded as the ‘Bible of Administrative Law in
Sri Lanka’.

The General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University emerged winners of the competition, beating the University of Colombo in the finals. Supreme Court Judge Buwaneka Aluwihare, along with Court of Appeal judges A.H.M.D Nawaz and Lakshman Dehideniya adjudicated the finals. The Award for Best Mooter and the Best Runner up Mooter were won by KDU’s Nath Gunawardena and Colombo University’s Vikum Jayasinghe respectively. The winners received their awards from Attorney General Jayantha Jayasuriya.

The Championship Shield was awarded in memory of Queen’s Counsel Herbert Victor Perera. Dr. Perera’s granddaughter was a special invitee at the event. The runners-up trophy was sponsored by Sri Lanka Law College Principal Indira Samarasinghe in memory of her parents Mary Therese and Reginald James Senaratne.
