Story of the Pen
The first ballpoint pen was invented by an individual by the name of Mr. Biro` and it found a ready market in the United States, more than a century ago. The idea of a ballpoint came to Biro` as he watched children playing with marbles; one marble left a trail on the ground after rolling through dirty water.
In as early as 1888, American John Loud developed an idea for a pen with five balls to ensure the smooth flow of ink, but it was never manufactured.
In 1938, Hungarian journalist Ladislaus Biro` had a similar idea.

After migrating to Argentina in 1940, Biro` applied in June 1944 for what is presumed to be the first ballpoint pen patent. The following year the first pens began to appear in the market in Argentina.
Ever since then, Biro ballpoint pens have become a household name and have earned an indispensable place in our daily life. However now it has gradually given way to more sophisticated and scientifically improved range of ballpoint pens.

A trip to Galle
My parents’ decided to go to Galle for the December holidays. We went on the highway. I saw rubber and coconut trees and huge rocks on the sides of the highway. My grandmother said that the highway was made by blasting the huge rocks and clearing a jungle. In an hour’s time we reached Galle and went to my grandmother’s house by the Fort ramparts. Over the ramparts we could see the beautiful sea and as it was sunset, the view was very nice.

The next morning, we got up early, had breakfast and went to Jungle Beach in Unawatuna. The walk through the jungle was fun as we came across monkeys and wildlife and then we came to the amazing view of the beach. We swam in the sea, played and made sandcastles on the beach. We didn’t want to leave but as the sun was getting hotter, we came back tired and hungry. Grandmother had made a special lunch, a specialty of Galle for us.

After lunch and a small nap, we went for a walk along the Fort ramparts with my cousins. My daddy said that the ramparts were built by the Dutch and that Galle Fort is a heritage city. There was a beautiful clock tower and a lighthouse too. We were lucky as the lighthouse was open and people could climb up. Daddy climbed up the ladder-like steps to the top and came back and said the view was beautiful.

We visited the National Maritime Museum situated in a Dutch warehouse above the old fort gate. We saw exhibits of marine art like naval craft, ropes, shipwrecks, artillery guns, barrels recovered from the sea and maps, coins and antiques. This is the best ramparts I have seen in Sri Lanka as it surrounds the entire city of Galle. I really enjoyed my trip to Galle.

Environmental pollution
The environment around us is a national property given to us by
Mother Nature. So it is our duty to protect it and keep it clean. But it is very sad to say wherever people live, there is environmental pollution.
There are three types of pollution.

They are water pollution, land pollution and air pollution.
Factories send out their waste to waterways, thus polluting the water affects the fish and other water lives.
Industries and vehicles emit smoke and gases to the air polluting it.
People dump polythene bags, coconut shells and empty tins and bottles on land and roadsides. The environment becomes a breeding place for mosquitoes.

If we do not protect the environment, we have to face adverse results from Mother Nature. So, it is
our duty to protect the environment and make it a safe place for both humans and animals.

The opposite day
Today’s an opposite day
Believe what I say
I stood up on my hands
To the top I wore my pants!

I brushed my teeth with a stick
Oh God! It was a toothpick.
I ate my  breakfast for lunch
And the plate I was about to munch!

I spilled my milk on my lap
And I couldn’t open the tap
I kept my hand on a burning lamp
On my head I pasted a stamp!

I painted my shoes black
And put it in a sack
I crushed a bread in the blender
What has happened to me
I wonder?
